August 26, 2000--Wetlands Workshop. In an effort to create public awareness of the importance in wetlands conservation, the Blue Heron Environmental Network Inc., in conjunction with the Izaak Walton League of America, will be sponsoring a one-day Wetlands Conservation and Sustainability Workshop on August 26, 2000. The Izaak Walton League of America's award winning Save Our Streams (SOS) program is currently heading an exciting effort to protect our wetlands through the American Wetlands Campaign. The workshop will be held in the Back Creek Watershed of Berkeley County, W.Va. from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The workshop will cover basic wetland components -- vegetation, hydrology and soils -- in the classroom and in the field. Participants examine plant adaptations and signs of hydrology and soil characteristics in the field, and determine the effect of surrounding land use impacts on wetland functions and values; and learn how to design a monitoring program and other possible stewardship activities. Other subjects to be covered will be wetlands regulations and policies, along with a 1 ½ hour wetland walk. Registration fee is $25 for classroom materials, payable in advance or the day of the workshop. Participants are asked to bring or wear rubber boots. Pack a lunch and drink, and bring insect repellant.
