STATEWIDE ISSUES:

NEW!!--Issue: Water conservation works in Albuquerque

A city-wide effort to curb water consumption in Albuquerque has reduced the city's use by twenty-two per cent. Total water used in 1999 was 30.1 million gallons, or 204 gallons per capita a day. That compared with daily use of 213 gallons per capita in 1998 and 210 in 1997.

Conservation incentives included rebates on high-efficiency washing machines, offering seminars on water usage, and requiring conservation plans from customers that used more than 50,000 gallons a day. The city also provided brochures outlining ways to reduce their use, such as waiting to wash full loads of laundry and taking shorter showers.

A 1995 study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that Albuquerque would draw down its aquifer to a crisis level by 2020 if the area grows at a medium rate and conservation is ignored. The study also said water levels insome areas of the city had dropped by as much as 140 feet over the past three decades.
