Allagash

Allagash Denied

Althought northern Maine's Allagash River has been a federally designated Wild and Scenic River since 1965, the state government there has failed to live up to its promises to protect the river and maintain its wilderness status. The American Canoe Assocation (www.aca.org) charges that the state of Maine has been negligent in allowing 14 roads leading to the river to be constructed, and in permitting the replacement of a wooden dam with a concrete structure, among other violations of the Wild and Scenic guarantees.
